Last February 13, students from the National Service Training Program of the Far Eastern University visited Gota de Leche. The group of volunteers gamely assisted Gota de Leche’s Thursday operations, which included feeding, documenting, and assisting the medical consultation of each beneficiary.

One student, Erika De Los Santos, appreciated the exposure that volunteerism provided. “It humanizes the less-fortunate, and it’s nice to give back and help those who were neglected,” she said.

Franz Pantaleon, a 2nd year literature student, was busy measuring the weights and heights of children when he declared, “It feels good (to help).” Franz also observed that Gota de Leche provided a venue and system for generous souls to provide assistance. “This is a simple way to be a part of a (charitable) system,” Franz said. Indeed, Gota de Leche’s longevity – it has been around since 1906 – can be partly attributed to the fact that it provides an efficient system for charitable work. This benefits not only beneficiaries, but also volunteers.

Tiffany Torres, who, along with Erika, was in charge of record keeping, had an epiphany: “I realized how fortunate I am. I can’t complain – I appreciate what I have more.”

Perhaps the most valuable lesson these students received that day was that being fortunate wasn’t simply a case of not being poor. Being fortunate also means volunteering and giving back to those in need of help. Thanks to the help of these FEU students, the milk of human kindness will continue flow.
